Q. What is the Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association?
The Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association is a not-for-profit 501(c) (4) corporation made up of the 88 sheriffs of Ohio, approximately 2,500 sheriff’s office employees and approximately 18,000 private citizens.
Founded in 1931, BSSA has quietly served the citizens of Ohio by supporting the needs of the state’s law enforcement community. BSSA is one of the Sheriffs’ Associations nationally that has full participation of all 88 Sheriffs in the state.
Through the Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association the 88 Sheriffs of Ohio are given a forum to address lawmakers and push for positive changes in the criminal justice system in our state. BSSA also provides Sheriffs Offices affordable training programs.
Q. How is the BSSA organized?
BSSA is a corporation made up of the 88 Sheriffs of Ohio. To ensure equal representation the state is divided into four districts with 22 counties in each district. A 19 member Board of Directors 15 Sheriffs and 4 Deputies manage the corporation. [View the current list of Board members here]
The BSSA employs an Executive Director and Assistant Executive Director to carry out the Association’s mission. The BSSA office is located in Columbus, Ohio.
Q. What are some of the BSSA’s programs and events?
The Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association holds an annual conference and exhibit show each November for Sheriffs and their command staff. The BSSA has organized a Sheriff’s Mutual Aid Response Tool (SMART) that allows quick and easy access to resources available in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. A Civil Process has been developed as well as a Funeral and Mourning Protocol Manual.
In cooperation with the County Risk Sharing Authority (CORSA) job descriptions and Best Practices policy and procedures have been developed for CORSA members.
